CNN —Robert Downey Jr. was unfazed by Jimmy Kimmel’s joke about his past drug use at this year’s Oscars. As Kimmel hosted, he made a joke about Downey Jr. being at “one of the highest points” of his career. “I don’t care,” Downey Jr. told Esquire. “Everybody loves the simple narrative of somehow I came in and turned his life around and blah, blah, blah,” she said. So was I.”The couple are the executive producers of the upcoming seven-episode HBO series “The Sympathizer,” in which Downey Jr. stars.

Christopher Nolan and Robert Downey Jr. have each worked on some of the most lucrative and beloved superhero films of our time, many of them with enormous star-filled casts, so how is it that the two had never worked together on a movie before now, superhero or otherwise? Their paths crossed, sort of, on “Batman Begins” (more on that later). Among those nominations are three for Nolan, 53, for best picture, best director and best adapted screenplay, and a best supporting actor one for Downey, 58, for his performance as Lewis Strauss, the title character’s Salieri-like nemesis. The nominations are hardly their first — counting “Oppenheimer,” Downey has received three, Nolan, eight — but neither has ever won before and now they’re both considered front-runners. The day after the Oscar nominations were announced, the two got together on the Universal studio lot to talk about how they first met, what winning an Oscar would mean to them, and why so many people didn’t notice that that balding, sweaty guy who had it in for Oppenheimer was actually Robert Downey Jr.

CNN —Robert Downey Jr. needs to work on his British accent, according to Kate Winslet. Besides playing Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chaplin, he once auditioned for “The Holiday,” opposite Winslet, who asked him what was up with his accent. Downey Jr. appeared on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show,” and recalled reading for the Nancy Meyers 2006 holiday comedy with Jimmy Fallon. “I thought, honestly, I said, ‘If Jack Black says no to this movie, I’m so in,’” Fallon recalled in the same Stern interview. “‘I’ll do it for half his price.’”Fallon also praised Downey Jr., saying, “I’m sitting across from Robert Downey Jr., and I go, ‘This is the best actor I’ve ever sat across and did a scene with in my entire life.”“It was mind-blowing for me and it kind of, I quit the business.

It would have seemed inconceivable then, but the atomic bomb did fade out of mind. And it’s precisely at this moment that Christopher Nolan is asking audiences to look it soberly in the eye. As the name suggests, Nolan has taken on the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific genius and conflicted godfather of the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy as godfather of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer in "Oppenheimer." But even if a war involving a nuclear power hadn’t erupted in Europe in 2022, Nolan believes “Oppenheimer” contains crossover anxieties.

CNN —At the end of “Sr.,” a documentary so personal the word “intimate” almost doesn’t do it justice, Robert Downey Jr. ponders what his 90-minute ode to his father was really all about. The simple answer, stripped of celebrity, is the painful process of saying goodbye to an aging, increasingly infirm parent, filtered through the careers of these two entertainers. It’s a conversation Downey Sr. clearly doesn’t relish having, although their interplay throughout is one of warmth, forgiveness and love, and if there was second guessing or recriminations on the way to making that peace, you won’t find it here. Shot over three years, the film captures Downey Sr.’s physical decline as he experiences the ravages of Parkinson’s disease. “I’ll miss him,” Downey Jr. says after visiting the old man with his own young son, Exton.
